Williams, Lawrence

The Williams group aims to develop superior synthetic strategies and to apply them to interesting problems at the interface of chemistry and its sister fields, including biological and materials science. The identification, development, and preparation of new catalytic systems are among the most challenging steps in chemical synthesis. At this point our understanding of catalysis must be translated into new matter: a new catalysts and a new catalyst product. The focus of all our studies is an improved understanding of molecular structure and reactivity. Based on these insights we invent and develop new methods and bring them into the arena of synthetic organic chemistry. For each reaction a mechanistic framework is established. The transformation is developed and applied to specific targets, such as to the synthesis of molecules that pose practical or academic problems of structural complexity.
